Will I whiten my filling?

Home/Blog / Will I whiten my filling?

I had a phase where I didn’t have dental insurance. Now, I’m noticing some things I want to improve. When I didn’t have insurance I still wanted to whiten my teeth, so I did some of the at-home whitening systems. I am liking my smile better, but now I have this really ugly filling that stands out. It hasn’t whitened. Do you think Zoom whitening will take care of it?

Sarah,

Zoom whitening is an in-office whitening system that uses a special light to activate the whitening agents. Unfortunately, nothing will change the color of your filling. It will remain the same color it did when you originally had it placed. The only way to lighten the shade of a filling will be to have it replaced with a lighter color.

That said, you need to be a little careful with some of those over-the-counter teeth whitening systems. If they are overused or used incorrectly you can unintentionally do some pretty serious damage to your teeth. Excessive teeth whitening may result in tender or sensitive gums, tooth pain, and damage to the enamel. If you have noticed any sensitivity, you need to stop with the do-it-yourself teeth whitening products immediately.

If you are still looking to brighten your smile, you should schedule an appointment with a local cosmetic dentist. Each dentist has their preferences regarding which teeth whitening system they prefer, whether it’s Zoom or Kor whitening, or take home trays, it’s always best to undergo whitening under the supervision of a dentist. This way you can have any other issues monitored or taken care of before proceeding with whitening. If budget is a concern, take home whitening trays, which are customized for your mouth, may be the best way to go. But again, it cannot be stressed enough how much you will benefit from a consultation with a dentist to figure out what is right for you.
