BOTOX® Cosmetic is an injectable treatment that is designed to help improve the appearance of wrinkles, forehead lines, crow’s feet, and other signs of facial aging. How Does BOTOX® Cosmetic Work?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is named for its primary ingredient: botulinum toxin. Although some patients may find the name intimidating, the formula has been FDA-approved for the temporary aesthetic improvement of dynamic facial wrinkles—wrinkles caused by repetitive facial movements. BOTOX® injections work by relaxing the muscles around the injection site. This causes them to stop contracting, thus diminishing the appearance of existing wrinkles and even halting the development of new ones. Patients often report that BOTOX® injections help them look younger and more refreshed. Dr. Miller can also include BOTOX® Cosmetic as part of a smile makeover in order to further highlight the aesthetic benefits of that comprehensive treatment.

BOTOX® Injections For TMJ Relief and Muscle Therapy

In addition to their cosmetic applications, BOTOX® injections can also provide relief for some patients experiencing TMJ-related jaw and muscle pain. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects the jawbone to the skull. Dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint can lead to a range of symptoms, including jaw pain, headaches, difficulty chewing, and more. BOTOX® for TMJ is designed to help relax the muscles around the injection site, temporarily reducing the strain on the temporomandibular joint and relieving pain. BOTOX® for TMJ is typically injected around the jaw, forehead, and/or temples, as needed. Dr. Miller can help assess your candidacy for treatment during an in-person consultation.

What is the BOTOX® Cosmetic Treatment Process Like?

The BOTOX® Cosmetic procedure is fairly straightforward and can typically be completed in thirty minutes or less, depending on how many areas are being treated. Dr. Miller will apply a topical anesthetic to help numb the injection site(s). Then, a thin needle will be used to precisely inject BOTOX® Cosmetic into the targeted areas. Most patients require little or no downtime, with many returning to work immediately after treatment.

Side effects after treatment may include minor redness, soreness, and itchiness around the injection site, but these should fade within a few hours to days.

What Will My BOTOX® Cosmetic Results Look Like?

The results of BOTOX® injections are not typically immediately visible, but they should begin to become apparent a few days after treatment. The final results should appear about 2 weeks after treatment. Patients often experience a dramatic decrease in the appearance of dynamic wrinkles and enjoy a more youthful, rejuvenated facial aesthetic.

For optimal long-term outcomes, we often recommend that patients receive “touch-up” treatments every 3-4 months.
